DOWN & DIRTY BARREL RACING 

Rules and Guidelines

  1. ALL OF THE DOWN & DIRTY BARREL RACING RULES AND GUIDELINES APPLY. 

  2. PRE-ENTRY DRAW 

We will do our best to accommodate NECESSARY special requests. We will not aid anyone in receiving a select place in the draw or a preferred spot on the ground but will accommodate for the following reasons: * If a contestant is running Multiple horses, we will do our best to give the contestant at least 2 rakes or approximately 14 runs between horses if pre entered. *If the contestant is traveling with a partner, we will do our best to make sure the contestants run within approximately 20 runs of each other if pre entered and noted Traveling Buddies on the entry form. *If a contestant needs to run later in the draw, pre enter and note on the entry “run towards bottom”. The requests will be granted to the best of our ability and will only be available for those who pre enter. Pre entries close the night before the event. Participants can sign up at the event from 6:00-6:30. Anyone who enters after 6:30 will be required to pay a $10.00 late fee. 


A. MEMBERSHIP AND DUES

  1. Membership Annual Dues are $55.00 and to be paid in full for each membership to cover the 2023 race season.

  2. Membership application and dues are to be submitted to receive any points. (Points will not be given for previous races. Points will begin once a membership application and dues are received in full) 

  3. No refunds will be given if a member is disqualified and/ or chooses to leave the club during the year. 

  4. If a membership is paid a non membership will not apply if running another horse.

                   1. The horse that is NOT designated the membership horse, will NOT receive any points.

       2. If a member wants to receive points for both horses a new membership will need to be paid for the other horse.

a. Points will not be given for previous races. In order for the non-member horse to earn points the membership needs to be paid in full for that horse. 

  1. Any outstanding fines or money owed must be paid in full before joining DDBR. 

  2. All members are required to read the rules carefully. Lack of knowledge of the rules will not prevent a member from experiencing the consequences. 

  3. A release form must be signed when the dues are paid. If participant is under 18 years of age, the release needs to be signed by a parent or legal guardian and witnessed by a board member.( This release waives all claims against the arena, owner/managers, Down & Dirty Barrel Racing board members and contestants for injuries to self, livestock, and/or personal property.

  4. Points are given to horses. The rider needs to compete on the horse that was established on the membership application. 

  1. Exception: A rider can pay a $10 substitution fee to DDBR. (Only to be used once.( A vet note or bill of sale will need to be provided for the next substitution). 

  2. If the horse has been hurt or passes. (The member will need to provide a vet note to waive the $10.00 fee) 

  3. The $10.00 fee will stand if the horse is sold. 

  4. When substitution is made this becomes the member horse for the season. 

  1. Original horse will not be able to come back as a member horse.

  2. One substitution per membership season

  3. Exception: If the horse is sold and comes back with another member/non-member. 

I. Members are responsible for notifying the Secretary of any changes to address and/or phone number 

Members can not run the same horse in the same division. 


B. FINES AND OR DISQUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Any participant (member and non-member) who fails to comply with the rules of DDBR may be fined or disqualified. 

  1. All complaints need to be in writing and filed to one of the executive board members within 48 hours of the incident with a $10.00 fee. ( The $10.00 fee will be returned if the complaint is withheld and the majority of the board are in favor of the complaint. 

  2. A majority vote upon Board members can result in a $30.00 fine and / or disqualification. 

  3. The participants will be notified by writing no later than 3 days after a complaint has been filed. 

  4. A meeting between board members will be within 7 days of the participants being notified. ( At this time any proof can be given to the executive board members).  

  5. If a fine is the result it will need to be paid in full by the next race. 

  6. If a disqualification is the result the participant(s) will sit out the next race and no points will be given. 

  7. If it is a second offense participant(s) can be fined and disqualified for the rest of the year. 

  8. If it is a third offense the participant(s) will not be allowed to enter any future races ( Jackpots included). 


2. DISQUALIFICATIONS

I. Knowing and willfully falsifying a DDBR application or entry form will result in a disqualification. 

II. Cheating or willfully misusing a rule. 

III. Running out of turn or before a name is called. 

Iv. Any act deemed prejudicial to the best interest of DDBR may result in the disqualification of the contestant, with no refund of the entry fees. The contestant may be placed upon a “ineligible” list. These acts may include but are not limited to the following: *Using abusive or intemperate language or attempting to threaten, bribe, influence or harass any contestant, spectator, staff member or arena personnel. Also, any remarks made with the intent to cast aspersions on the character or integrity of a DDBR staff member or management member. *Moving or attempting to move markers at any time. *Use of electronic or remotely controlled devices to alter the outcome of a run. *Abuse of a horse in any way either on the ground or in the saddle. *Competing while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. *Misidentifying a rider in any barrel race class. *Misidentifying a horse in any barrel class. * Other conduct that is not in the best interest of DDBR or its contestants. *Failure to make good on a returned check. *DDBR management at their sole discretion shall have the authority to disqualify or deny entry to any horse they deem dangerous to the rider, or to other individuals, animals or property.


C. Age Groups

**For youth age groups in order to be eligible for the age group you must be that age on Jan 1st.

  1. Peewees ( 7 and Under)

D. CHECKS/MONEY EARNED

  1. CHECKS

  1. Any participant who has a check returned to DDBR will be fined $25.00 for each check. The fine must be paid in full in order to enter the next Barrel race. A second returned check the participant will be fined $25.00 and will only be allowed to CASH for the remainder of the season. 

  2. If a check is lost or stolen after being picked up from DDBR a $25.00 cancellation of the check will need to be paid prior to the new check being issued. ( The money can not be taken out of earnings). 

2. MONEY EARNED 

A. Participants are responsible for picking up checks at each race and/or setting up a time to meet with the Treasurer to pick up the check. (If outside Tooele County, we can mail the check if arrangements are made). 

B. DDBR will not be using previous checks as entry fees. 


E. CODE OF CONDUCT

  1. MEMBERS/NON-MEMBERS/SPECTATORS

  1. No members shall refuse any reasonable request to assist DDBR in the proper conduct of its affairs. While conducting DDBR affairs, all representatives’ shall be treated with courtesy, cooperation and respect. 

  2. DDBR will not tolerate any profanity, abusive and or threatening behavior towards any board member, arena help, arena owners/management, members, non-members, mistreatment of horses, and any spectator. 

  3. If any member or non- member is using social media and/or text during an event to conduct any Unsportsmanlike, threatening, and or abusive behavior. Can result in disciplinary action. See Section B Fines and or Disqualifications for regulations. 



2. DRESS CODE

  1. Any participant in the event must be wearing cowboy/riding boots

  2. No tennis shoes, sandals, and/or bare feet are permitted to compete in. 

  3. All participants need to wear long pants during the competition. 


F. ENTRIES

  1. Entry fees must be paid in full prior to running.

  2. Posted pre entry draw is subject to change pending late entries, scratches, errors, and omissions. 

  3. Once the race starts no entry fee will be refunded. 

  4. There is a $15.00 fee for non-members 

  5. Any entry after 6:30p.m will have a $10.00 late fee applied. 


G. YEAR END AWARDS

1.AWARDS

  1. Awards will be based on year end points for each division 

  1. If there is a tie in the division with points, we will then decide the winner based upon money earned. If there is a tie on money earned we will determine the winner based on attendance. 

  2. Membership funds and entry fees will go towards awards and facilities. 

  3. All prizes will be based on sponsorships received for the year as well as how many members we have. 

  4. Saddles will be awarded as long as the funds are available to do so

  5. Not every age group is guaranteed a Saddle. This will be based on how many saddle sponsors we have for the year. If there are not enough Saddle Sponsors for all divisions we will look at the amount of money each age group has brought in for the year to see if we can justify a Saddle for the age group. 

  6. Pee wees will not be eligible for Saddles unless there are enough members in the group to justify a Saddle purchase. Pee Wee prizes may be different from the other age groups. 

  7. At the year end awards ceremony, awards can be picked up if the participant has provided the President in writing the name of the person who will be picking up the award.



2. SPORTSMANSHIP, HORSEMANSHIP AND MOST IMPROVED.

  1. We will be presenting an award for the individuals with the best sportsmanship, horsemanship and most improved based on encouraging behavior, improvement, attendance, integrity and genuine characteristics. 

  2. We encourage members to nominate other members for these awards. 

  3. The board of directors will meet prior to the awards ceremony to go over the nominations, if no nominations are received the Board of Directors will nominate individuals for the awards based on their conduct throughout the season. 


3. HIGH POINT

  1. High point Barrel Saddles will be awarded to each division (excluding the Pee Wees) for the 2023 season

  2. Poles will have different high point awards for the season

  1. If there is a tie in the division with points, the tie breaker will be money earned. If there is a tie on money earned, the winner will be determined based on attendance.

  2. Each age group and Open 4D division will receive a high point winner. 

  3. If a member is competing in youth and open 4D and wins high points in both divisions, the member will only receive the high point for Open 4D and the member in 2nd for the youth will be high point. 

  1. POINTS

  1. POINTS ARE GIVEN BASED ON A RIDER HORSE COMBO. 

  2. WE USE A POINT SYSTEM TO PROVIDE POINT TO EACH D AND THE YOUTH.


1ST- 10 POINTS 

2ND 9 POINTS 

3RD 8 POINTS 

4TH 7 POINTS 

5TH 6 POINTS 

6TH 5 POINTS 

7TH 4 POINTS 

8TH 3 POINTS

9TH 2 POINTS 

All members will get 1 participation point as well. 

  1. OPEN 4D PLACING

1. We do a ½ second split between each division 

  1. 1D will be based off of the fastest run of the night

  2. 2D will be determined ½ second slower than the 1D time. 

  3. 3D will be determined ½ second slower than the 2D time 

  4. 4D will be determined ½ second slower than the 3D time 

  1. Any remaining times will fall under the 4D

4. YOUTH 3D PLACING 

1. We do a 1 second split between each division

A. 1D will be based off of the fastest run of the night

B. 2D will be determined 1 second slower than the 1D time

C. 3D will be determined 1 second slower than the 2D time. 

H. BARRELS

  1. RULES/REGULATIONS

  1. The exact measurement of a barrel pattern will be determined by the size of the arena. If indoor we will use the laser beams. 

  1. Exception: Pee Wees will be running a smaller pattern than the normal size barrel pattern, This will be determined before the season starts and marked to use the rest of the season. 

B. A broken pattern will result in no time 

C. If the participant crosses the starting line at any time before the pattern is completed a NO TIME will be given. 

D. Knocking over a barrel will result in a 5 second penalty per barrel.

E. We use electronic eyes, if these fail to work we will have a backup timer going and that will be your time. 

F. No parents or assistants are allowed beyond the starting line. 

1.Exception: Pee Wee group parents are allowed to lead the horse and rider through the pattern. 

G. We rake every 7 contestants. 

H. We will provide 3 gate calls

1. If the contestant is not at the gate on the 3rd call, it will result in forfeit. (Entry fee will not be refunded. 

I. Running out of turn will result in disqualification. 

J. Members and non-members may run in the barrel class.

K. Members and non-members may run as many horses as the desire in the barrel class. 

I. POLES

  1. RULES/REGULATIONS

  1. The pattern will be run around 6 poles, poles are set on the ground, and in a straight line. 

  1. Exception: The Pee Wee class will have 4 poles 

B. A broken pattern will result in a NO TIME 

C. If the participant crossed the starting line at any time before the pattern is completed will be given a NO TIME. 

D. Knocking over a pole will result in a 5 second penalty per pole. 

E. We use electronic eyes, if these fail to work we will have a backup timer going and that will be your time. 

F. No parents or assistants are allowed beyond the starting line. 

1.Exception: Pee Wee group parents are allowed to lead the horse and rider through the pattern. 

G. We rake every 7 contestants. 

H. We will provide 3 gate calls

1. If the contestant is not at the gate on the 3rd call, it will result in forfeit. (Entry fee will not be refunded. 

I. Running out of turn will result in disqualification 

J. Members and non-members may run in the pole class.

K. Members and non-members may run as many horses as they desire in the pole class. 


J. RULES/REGULATIONS

  1. We will run with the gate closed in the indoor arena. 

  2. Youth will run with the gate closed in the indoor and outdoor arena.

  3. If over 18 you can choose to have an open gate on the outdoor arena only. 

  1. Needs to be specified if they want an open gate prior to run. 

D. There will be no crowding the gate. 

E. Saddling and unsaddling will not be prohibited near or by the gate. (This needs to be done at your trailer) 


K. SAFETY 

  1. Safety is the prime objective at DDBR events. If a rider has a horse that could be dangerous to other contestants or to them self, or other horses, DO NOT come to this event. Any horse or contestant deemed to be dangerous by the management of DDBR will be disqualified and entry fees will not be refunded.

L. CANCELLATIONS AND POSTPONEMENTS

A.  DDBR reserves the right to postpone any barrel race due to a natural or manmade disaster or any event that affects the public's safety. We do not like to put these conditions on any event, but feel it is not fair if only a small percentage of barrel racers can attend. Any monies collected will be refunded. If any event is postponed, we will do our best to reschedule at a later date. No postponement or cancellation will be made due to lack of entries.
